Game-based Gavin

Gavin Griffiths, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 8, initially struggled to accept his condition. However, he has since transformed his journey, receiving multiple awards for his efforts to improve diabetes care.

Reflecting on his school days, Gavin emphasizes the importance of making education engaging and empowering, especially in healthcare. In 2014, he led an innovative initiative in Northern Ireland, taking children outdoors for diabetes learning activities. This sparked his passion for creating game-based educational experiences in collaboration with diabetes teams and charities in the UK and worldwide.

"Game-based Gavin" is a guide containing a series of games with instructions for healthcare teams or organisations who wish to add fun to their education sessions.

These activities aim for children & adolescents to meet and learn together through active educational games to begin to see diabetes in a more positive light and take steps towards personal independence with a deeper understanding of the condition: activities include sporty fixtures of Team Meals vs Team Insulin, a boot-camp understanding of the diabetes terminologies with hypo squats, hyper jumps and insulin wiggles… and opening up in a creative way about diabetes dislikes and diabetes likes.
